A Nonsurgical Approach to Disc Injury
Diagnosing and treating disc injuries requires specific training and experience since they can be a severe issue. It is crucial to treat a disc injury promptly so it does not progress to the point of causing more damage or possibly needing surgery.
With a specialty in treating disc injuries, Dr. Josh Barney has the skills and expertise required to truly relieve the pain associated with this type of injury.
Once the overall extent of the injury to your neck or back has been assessed, if needed, Dr. Barney’s first course of action would be an adjustment to relieve pain. In addition to an adjustment, Dr. Barney would use nonsurgical decompression therapy. This technique decompresses the spine, allowing water back into the injured disc, which relieves any pinching pain quickly.
By increasing circulation and reducing compression of the nearby spinal nerve roots, it begins the natural healing process.
If treated early enough, decompression therapy can often prevent the need for surgery, resulting in a quicker recovery, which is why this technique is Dr. Barney’s first step in treating injured discs.

When you have an appointment with Dr. Barney, not only will he treat your spinal complaints, he will treat the surrounding musculature as well.
Adjusting the muscles surrounding the joints takes the tension away from the joints, easing the pain, helping you achieve results as quickly as possible, and giving you longer-lasting relief. This comprehensive approach sets him apart from other chiropractors who focus only on spinal adjustments, rather than treating the entire issue.
Outside of work, Dr. Barney loves to stay active by running and hiking. You might find him out with his wife, Christine, enjoying everything St. Louis has to offer and cheering on the Cardinals.

That depends on two things: your condition when you started and your overall health goals. Relief from current pains may take only a few weeks of care, after which it is up to you whether you want to continue your care.
For many, chiropractic is part of their balanced healthcare just like dentist appointments. They have regular spinal check-ups to maintain the spinal health they achieved after their initial care.
Chiropractic care is usually pain-free unless the patient was previously in acute pain before the visit. In that case, we perform very light and conservative care to help the patient experience decreased pain as soon as possible. Some patients are slightly uncomfortable due to being in new and unfamiliar positions, but that rarely causes an increase in pain or symptoms.
In some cases, there is light pressure on your spinal joints and/or you may hear a popping sound, but there is rarely pain during an adjustment.
No, chiropractic care can benefit organs, tissues, systems, and cells in your body by optimizing your body’s ability to heal itself. Although it’s usually associated with back pain, chiropractic has been shown to be effective in relieving headache, neck pain, arthritis, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, and many other conditions.
